I promise to do my best,Cub Salute from Scouts Canada Wiki Page - http://wiki.scouts.ca/

To love and serve God, to do my duty to the Queen;
To keep the law of the Wolf Cub pack,
And to do a good turn for somebody every day.
                               -Canadian Cub Scout Promise
That’s quiet a bit for a small Cub to remember, especially if they only had to know “I promise to love God and help take care of the world” as a Beaver Scout. How do you make sure that all your Cubs know the promise without drilling them with repeat after me?

You have them play a game that’s a race. Credit to this method goes to a Scouter from when I was at Yenndon.

Photo of Queen Elizabeth
Queen Elizabeth II

Materials needed for this game:

  • picture of the queen
  • an item to represent “God” in a spiritual way
(I normally resort to using the Cub Scout Flag or Canadian Flag)(Editor’s note- “God” in Scouts Canada is a placeholder word for the concept of spirituality, and will be used in the same way here)
  • a wolf totem
  • space to run

Before you have the Cubs do a run through, make sure that your totem is center of where the Cubs will be running. To your left (or right) should be the symbolic item to represent spirituality and opposite should be the Queen.

First, you start them in rock circle with their right hand up and have them say “I Promise”.

They then take a step back and say “to do my best”. Have the Cubs bolt to where your symbolic item is and upon reaching it say “To love and serve God”. Next, Cubs have to run over to where the Queen is and repeat “to do my duty to the Queen” once they reach the photo.

Cubs will then run to return to rock circle, look at the totem and say “To keep the law of the Wolf Cub pack“.

Finally, they spin around to say “And to do a good turn for somebody every day.

Benefits of this? Well, the Cubs will remember their running around and recall how they ran better than just straight up memorizing the Promise. It also doubles as a great burn off game.

What have you done to help the Cubs learn their Promise?

my cubs love singing the promise to the tune of the A & W root beer song ~ it fits and the cadence helps them remember the promise (as does movement, we sometimes put hands on eah others shoulders and dance around in a circle while chanting the promise, then we reverse direction on the ‘ba dump ba dump, ba dump ba dump dump .. ba dump ba dump, ba dump ba dump dump (go through that twice then do the promise again)

I just listened to the A & W Root Beer Song and see how it fits in. I’ll definitely give it a whirl next year. 🙂

    Thanks for sharing!
